1. COPYRIGHTS: The first thing you should do after you finish your book is to register it with the Copyright Office of the Library of Congress. To protect your copyright while your work is in progress, register a copy of the work-in-progress to yourself through the U.S. Postal Service. Click here for more information about copyrights. 2. REJECTED: If your book has been rejected by literary agents and/or publishers, don't despair! Self-publishing gives every author the opportunity to make money from his or her writing. Click here for more information. 3. MARKETING: The most important ingredient in the success of your book---whether you self-publish or have a publisher---is how it is marketed. Most authors concentrate all of their attention on writing and leave the business end of writing to others. This is almost always a mistake! Click here to learn more. 4. OUT-OF-PRINT: Mainstream publishers report that about 90% of their new titles go out of print after the first short print run. Click here for more information. 5. PRINT RUNS:
As a self-publisher, you will have many different printing needs. But the
most important printing need you will ever have is the printing of your book. Click here for more information about how to find a wholesale book printer. WRITERS' RESOURCES: 1. One of the best sites I have found for authors and publishers is at www.midwestbookreview.com. You will find a wealth of information --- literally hundreds of helpful articles --- for authors and small publishers. You will also find links to other important sites. Be prepared to spend some time at this site! 2. Another useful site for authors is www.writersdigest.com, home of the largest writers' magazine in the U.S. Here you will find writer's guidelines, helpful articles, and links to other author's resources. 3. Looking for out-of-print books? Amazon.com offers a service for finding out-of-print books. You may also try www.abebooks.com and www.bibliofind.com for that hard-to-find or out-of-print book. 4. Copyright forms can be obtained at www.loc.gov/copyright/forms/. 5. Go to www.bowker.com to obtain ISBN's (International Standard Book Numbers). 6. For answers to legal questions involving authoring and publishing, go to www.ivanhoffman.com.
