Signature Files

If you aren't using signature files on all of your outgoing e-mail, you're missing out on one of the best FREE ways to promote your online business. Signature files provide free advertising with every e-mail you send!
A signature file is like a "resource box" at the end of an article. It contains basic contact information and it can also contain a brief plug for your web site. If you have several offers, you can use several different signature files, one for each offer. Using multiple signature files to promote multiple offers can be especially beneficial if you do multiple mailings to the same list.
A signature file should include your name and title, the name of your company, and a short mention of your offer with URL and e-mail links. (Some signature files also include off-line contact information such as mailing addresses or phone/fax numbers.) Example:
Q. Mason, President

The following six steps will help you create effective signature files to promote your online business every time you send an e-mail:
1. Learn how to use your e-mail software. You will find tools for creating signature files, stationery files, address books, and other useful things in the drop-down menus on your e-mail tool bar.
2. If you have multiple offers, create a signature file for each offer. Some e-mail programs will only allow you to create one signature file. If your e-mail program is limited in this way, consider upgrading to a more comprehensive e-mail program such as Eudora Pro.
3. Always include the appropriate contact information in your signature files.
4. Include a brief description of your offer. This should promise a benefit in the form of a statement or a question. Keep it short, since your entire signature file should be no longer than six to eight lines.
5. Most e-mail programs allow you to opt to have your signature file automatically attached to all outgoing e-mail. If you are using more than one signature file, remember to attach the right one to your messages.
6. One method that seems to work for businesses with multiple offers is to change signature files periodically. For instance, if you had twelve separate offers, you could create a different signature file each month to promote one of your offers. This could be especially effective if you featured a monthly special.
It costs nothing to use a signature file at the end of e-mail messages, yet many netpreneurs are neglecting to use this free e-mail tool to promote their web sites. Don't be one of them!
